SUMMARY:Katavedita Ceremony for Phra Kru Vinaitorn Nut Nuttapanyo
DESCRIPTION:Phra Kru Vinaitorn Nut Nuttapanyo is one of Luang Por Thoon’s students. While he was finishing the final year of his Ph.D. program\, he had the opportunity to meet our teachers and listen to dhamma verses from Luang Por Thoon. During the last year of his internship as a student at UC San Diego\, he decided to dedicate his life to continuing practice dhamma. \nPhra Nuttapanyo was ordained as a monk on Saturday\, December 29th\, 2007\, and became the Abbot of San Fran Dhammaram Temple from 2013 to 2021. He has always worked hard to support the community with many hands-on projects. Phra Nuttapanyo has served as an advisor of Wat San Fran School from its inception. He is helpful and kind and his knowledge has helped SFDT to become our temple and community it is today.  \nDue to urgent personal issues\, Phra Nuttapanyo will return to Thailand on December 7th\, 2021. While we are sad about his departure from SFDT we wish him well. Wherever life may take him\, may he find success. This year’s Kathina will be a closed event\, and we will provide the live stream of the ceremony on YouTube Live (www.youtube.com/watsanfran) on October 31\, 2021 starting at 9:00 a.m. \n2. DESCRIPTION:You are invited to attend Asalaha Puja Day and the Buddhist Lent celebration and merit-making ceremony at San Fran Dhammaram Temple on Sunday\, July 25\, 2021. \nAsalha Puja Day commemorates the day in which the Buddha gave his first sermon\, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta “Setting the Wheel of Dhamma into Motion\,” to his first five disciples. The main topic of this sermon is the Four Noble Truths\, which provide the framework for all of the Buddha’s teachings. At the end of the sermon\, one of the five disciples was able to understand and possess a firm truth in the Dhamma. He then asked to be ordained as a Buddhist monk\, thus establishing the order of monks called the Sangha. \nFollowing Asalha Puja Day is the beginning of the Buddhist Lent\, a period established by the Buddha in which all monks must stay in one monastery throughout the rainy season. In many monasteries\, monks dedicate this three-month period to intensive Dhamma practice. \nThe commemoration of this annual event includes the offering of candles\, alms\, and charity to monks\, listening to the Buddha’s teachings\, chanting\, and a candle procession to pay homage to the Triple Gem (Buddha\, Dhamma\, and Sangha).

DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating Asalha Puja Day and the start of Buddhist Lent (“Khao Phansa”) at Wat San Fran. \nSchedule \n10:40 a.m. Alms round\n10:50 a.m. Lunch offering\n11:00 a.m. Sermon\n12:00 p.m. Sanghadana offering\n12:30 p.m. Chanting\n12:45 p.m. Candle procession ceremony \nAsalha Puja Day commemorates the day in which the Buddha gave his first sermon\, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta “Setting the Wheel of Dhamma into Motion\,” to his first five disciples. The main topic of this sermon is the Four Noble Truths\, which provide the framework for all of the Buddha’s teachings. At the end of the sermon\, one of the five disciples was able to understand and possess a firm truth in the Dhamma. He then asked to be ordained as a Buddhist monk\, thus establishing the order of monks called the Sangha. \nFollowing Asalha Puja Day is the beginning of the Buddhist Lent\,  a period established by the Buddha in which all monks must stay in one monastery throughout the rainy season. In many monasteries\, monks dedicate this three-month period to intensive Dhamma practice. \nThe commemoration of this annual event includes the offering of candles\, alms\, and charity to monks\, listening to the Buddha’s teachings\, chanting\, and a candle procession to pay homage to the Triple Gem (Buddha\, Dhamma\, and Sangha).

DESCRIPTION:Buddhists often spend the Uposatha holy days wearing white and practicing the 8-precepts at the temple. With the Akaliko Women’s Residence finally ready to support a weekend of dedicated practitioners\, San Fran Dhammaram Temple was able to hold an Uposatha event for both of its male and female members. SFDT has instituted a monthly Uposatha observance program with the following dates. \nFriday\, April 19 – Monday\, April 22 \nEach program starts the night of the first date and ends the morning of the last date. Groups of 5 or more who seek to observe the 8-precepts on alternate dates may submit requests at the temple. You are welcome to bring your own sleeping bags and white clothes\, although you may also borrow or purchase from the temple’s supply. Reserve your spot asap\, as space is limited. \nEnsure that programs like these continue to be available by pledging a monthly donation. Donations can be made via PayPal or by mail (2645 Lincoln Way\, SF CA 94122).
