DESCRIPTION:Eight Precept Observance \nIt is the responsibility of all beings to observe the Five Precepts\, refraining from killing\, stealing\, adultery\, harmful speech\, and intoxicants. Certain people choose to challenge themselves and take on the Eight Precepts. The challenge\, the restraint\, the effort\, the striving\, and the wisdom gained are what generates valuable merit. \nWe are offering interested members to come join us for Eight Precept observance from Friday\, December 27 at 7 a.m. to Wednesday\, January 1 at 7 a.m. When you arrive\, you will change into white clothes and request the Eight Precepts from a monk. Then\, you will spend your days reading\, chanting\, cleaning\, meditating and learning the Dhamma. You will have instruction and sufficient free time for personal practice. SUMMARY:New Year's alms rounds
DESCRIPTION:Pindapata\, or alms rounds\, is a common thing to see in Thailand. It is not common and actually very rare to encounter it in non-Buddhist countries. We at Wat San Fran try our best to maintain the traditions of Buddhism even here in San Francisco. We do this so that Buddhists in San Francisco have the same opportunities to make merit as their loved ones in Thailand.\n\nEvery New Year\, lay supporters line up in front of the temple with rice cups with which to give alms. Afterwards\, the ceremony is taken inside\, where the lay supporters offer food to the monks. Then the abbot gives a sermon and the monks give their thanks by chanting auspicious blessings. After sharing in the bountiful feast\, the lay supporters have the opportunity to offer sanghadana and make merit.\n
