Pindapata, or alms rounds, is a common thing to see in Thailand. It is not common and actually very rare to encounter it in non-Buddhist countries. We at Wat San Fran try our best to maintain the traditions of Buddhism even here in San Francisco. We do this so that Buddhists in San Francisco have the same opportunities to make merit as their loved ones in Thailand.
Every New Year, lay supporters line up in front of the temple with rice cups with which to give alms. Afterwards, the ceremony is taken inside, where the lay supporters offer food to the monks. Then the abbot gives a sermon and the monks give their thanks by chanting auspicious blessings. After sharing in the bountiful feast, the lay supporters have the opportunity to offer sanghadana and make merit.
